What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery breast procedure done to increase the size of the breasts using implants. This procedure can also help to even out asymmetrical breasts or correct breasts that have developed abnormally.

Who is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Patients who are healthy, nonsmokers who are not pregnant or breastfeeding are often good candidates for this procedure. It is important that an individual’s breasts be fully developed before undergoing breast augmentation. A consultation with Dr. Narasimhan can help to best determine if you are a good candidate for breast augmentation.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

A breast augmentation can be performed using a selection of breast implants and a variety of incision patterns.

Implants

Patients can choose between saline and silicone breast implants. Saline implants are made up of a silicone shell filled with a sterile saline solution. Silicone implants are made of a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel. Both implants are safe options to increase the size of the breasts.

Incision Patterns

There are different incisions patterns that can be used depending on the individual’s anatomy, the type of breast implant used, and desired aesthetic results. The perioareolar incision is made around the areolas; the inframammary incision is created in the breast crease, and the transaxillary incision is made in the armpit region.

Results

Following breast augmentation, patients will need to wear a compression garment to control swelling, along with gauze dressings. Specific recovery time will be determined by Dr. Narasimhan during your consultation.
