What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery is done to increase the size of the breasts using implants. As one of the most popular forms of breast surgery done today, breast augmentation is highly customizable to help fit each patient’s unique aesthetic goals.

Who is a Candidate?

Individuals who feel that their breasts are too small, or whose breasts have become smaller due to weight loss or childbirth can often benefit from breast augmentation surgery. Breast augmentation can also help to improve the way clothing fits and create a more proportionate body silhouette.

In general, patients should be healthy, non-smokers with realistic expectations for the outcome of their breast procedure.

Implant Options

Breast augmentation augments the breasts using implants. There are two main implant options used today: saline implants and silicone implants.

Saline Implants: Saline implants are made up of silicone shells filled with a sterile saltwater solution. When inserted into the breasts, these implants are left empty and then filled once they are in place. In the case that a saline implant was to rupture, the saline solution would simply be absorbed by the body, and the implant would deflate.

Silicone Implants: Silicone implants are comprised of a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel. If a saline implant were to rupture, it can be more difficult to detect, since the implant will not deflate like saline implants. Silicone gel cannot be absorbed by the body, so in the case of a rupture, contact your plastic surgeon ASAP.

Recovery

In general, patients should take two weeks to recover from their breast augmentation procedure. In some cases, patients with desk jobs can return to work within one week. Dr. Narasimhan will provide you with specific instructions to ensure a safe and timely recovery.
