Patients who are experiencing lines around their eyes and forehead can often look tired, sad, or angry. Thankfully, there is a minimally invasive option for those who wish to eliminate these lines with absolutely no downtime. Botox® is a popular option for quick and natural-looking results.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is an injectable made up from the neurotoxin botulinum toxin type A, similar to Dysport® in Concord. This product is used in small doses to temporarily treat wrinkles in the facial region. Botox® is FDA-approved to remove crow’s feet, glabellar lines between the eyebrows, and horizontal forehead lines. It can also be used medically to treat migraines and excessive sweating.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX® AND DYSPORT®?

While Botox® and Dysport® are both neuromodulators meant to smooth the appearance of expression lines in the face, there are some differences between the two. One difference is that Dysport® begins to show results in about 2-5 days, while Botox® results become apparent in 4-7 days. However, Dysport® may not last quite as long as Botox® for some. Also, Dysport® spreads to wider areas after being injected, which can be an advantage in some areas of the face and a disadvantage in others. Overall, a consultation with Dr. Narasimhan can help to determine which product is best for your individual aesthetic goals.

How does Botox work®?

Botox® works by prohibiting nerve signals from the brain from reaching the muscles, preventing them from contracting. These contractions occur when we use our muscles for facial expressions and are what cause wrinkle over time. Before your Botox® injections, Dr. Narasimhan is a Plastic Surgeon in Boston and will go over the process with you during your consultation and create a unique plan to meet your individual needs.

Who is a good candidate for Botox®?

Ideal candidates for Botox are healthy men and women who have developed unwanted lines or wrinkles on their face due to excess muscle movement. Patients who have realistic expectations are often the happiest with their results.

What should I expect during recovery from Botox®?

A Botox® treatment session can take as little as 15 minutes to complete, depending on the number of areas being treated. Patients should expect to see some improvements within 24 hours, though full results will be visible within four weeks. Botox® usually lasts around three to four months before another session is needed to maintain results. There is no downtime required after Botox® injections, though strenuous activities should be avoided for the remainder of the day. Any redness, swelling or bruising that occurs should resolve within 24 hours.
