What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery breast enhancement procedure to date. It is done to increase the size of the breasts using breast implants. Many patients who wish to obtain a more proportionate body silhouette opt for this procedure.
Who is a Candidate?
Individuals who feel that their breasts are too small or are asymmetrical, or wish to rejuvenate their breasts following pregnancy, weight loss or aging can often benefit from a breast augmentation. It is important that patients not be breastfeeding and have a positive outlook on the outcome of their procedure to be considered for this surgery. A consultation with Dr. Narasimhan can help to determine if this procedure is right for you.
Breast augmentation can be performed using silicone implants, saline implants, or “gummy bear” implants. Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel, while saline implants are filled with a saline solution. “gummy bear implants” are similar to silicone gel implants, only their material keeps its shape better.
Patients can also choose from a number of incision options, including the periareolar incision (around the areola), inframammary incision (in the breast crease), and transaxillary incision (in the armpit). The type of implant and incision used will depend on your individual anatomy and desires aesthetic outcomes.
Following breast augmentation surgery, patients will need to wear a special support bra to help reduce swelling and support their new breast contour. Discomfort may occur, which can be controlled with pain medication. Excessive physical activity should be avoided for 2-6 weeks after surgery.
